The beating heart
of northern Mozambique

Good text.

“Nampula brings together in a single place what many countries spend decades looking for — ancient history, untouched nature, living culture and an endless ocean.”

At the centre of this wealth is Nampula city, the most dynamic in the north, where the National Museum of Ethnology preserves the legacy of the Macua people — Mozambique's largest ethnolinguistic group — and where modernity lives alongside centuries-old traditions.

The Soul of the Province

The Macua People —
guardians of centuries

The Macua are Mozambique's largest ethnolinguistic group and the cultural soul of Nampula. Their language, Emakhwa, is spoken by millions of people across the north of the country.

Macua culture lives on in the Mapiko masks, the Tufo dance of the coastal communities, pottery, basketry and mussiro — the white root mask women wear on their faces, today one of the most recognisable visual symbols of Mozambique.
