Nampula has a humid tropical climate, with average temperatures between 25 and 32 °C for almost the whole year. What changes from season to season is not so much the heat — it's the rain.
The two seasons
The dry season, from May to November, brings clear skies, calm seas and the best underwater visibility of the year. It is when inland roads are passable and trekking in the mountains is possible.
The rainy season, from December to April, is hot and humid, with intense but usually short tropical downpours. Dirt roads become difficult; on the plus side, the landscape turns green and there are fewer people.
The best time for each thing
If your goal is diving and beaches, July to September is the prime period: maximum underwater visibility and perfect weather. For trekking on Namuli, the same dry window. For those who want to catch festivals and celebrations, the cultural calendar is another story — and well worth checking.
What to bring
Light clothing all year round, sunscreen and a hat. For the rainy season, a thin raincoat. For the mountains, a warm layer — nights on the summit of Namuli are cold.
